About Our Collection
Atkinson Library houses over 40,000 print volumes, which can be searched using our online catalog. Most books are available to check out. In order to check out materials, a Jackson District Library card is needed, which can be obtained at the library circulation desk. Materials from Jackson District Library can also be requested and checked out with a library card issued at JC.
The library also has nearly 100,000 e-books available through ebrary. These books can be viewed online or downloaded to a computer or e-reader. All titles are academic in nature, spanning a variety of topics.
Need articles? Use one of our many academic databases! General and subject-specific databases are available for use on-campus or off. Off-campus users need to log in using their JC username and password.
The library also houses many print periodicals. These include many academic titles as well as a few leisure titles. Periodicals generally do not circulate, but faculty members may check them out. See the circulation desk for more information.
Can't find the book you need at JC? No problem! We can get it for you from another library.
Our primary service is provided through MeLCat - a statewide borrowing service that enables users to borrow books from nearly every library in Michigan, including both public and academic libraries. Requests can be placed online using your JC library card. Books usually take a week to two weeks to arrive. Users must have a current email address on file with the library in order to receive notifications regarding MeL books.
If the book cannot be borrowed through MeLCat, the book can be requested through OCLC WorldCat using this form. This system enables us to borrow from libraries throughout the country (and occasionally countries outside the US, as well). Books requested through OCLC typically take two to four weeks to arrive, as they are sent via media mail.
Atkinson Library houses textbooks on reserve for students to use in the library. These texts are placed with us by the instructor for students to use in the library or for students to check out for a couple days. If you would like to have your class text available, please bring the textbook to the library, where we will have you fill out a short form.
